Robert grew up at Middlesbrough. His mother was a widow since late 1917.

Her husband Marshall was a blacksmith. From a previous marriage he had two children and got married in 1913 with Mary Ellen. Together they had a son called Alex. Marshall died during the first world war when he was a ‘snapper’ at the Royal Engineers in France. His brother George died in Vlaanderen, Belgium. The father of Robert and his younger brother Ken is unknown.

Based on his servicenumber he joined the army in May 1940. From March 1943 he was part of the 106e squadron at Syerston.

His brother Alex was in service with the Royal Artillery, he survived the war.

Buried: R.K. Begraafplaats in Rossum.

Awarded with the War Medal, the 1939-1945 Star and the Europe Star.
