He grew up in Mokomon in a family of eight children. His parents were Finnish immigrants. His father was a carpenter, Eugene was a truck driver.
He came into service in October 1942 with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. In May 1943 he went overseas and in August 1944 he went to France. In the fall of 1944 he got wounded in Belgium and in the spring of 1945 in France. Meanwhile his wife, had a relationship with someone else and asked for a divorce in August 1944.
On April 27, Eugene drove his truck loaded with jerry cans of petrol in a convoy from Borne. In Almelo he got off the road and hit a tree and his truck caught fire. He was transferred with severe burns to the Canadian Military Hospital in Ootmarsum, where he died a few days later.
